Giovanni Battista Somis

Giovanni Battista Somis (1686–1763) was an Italian violinist and composer, primarily associated with the Baroque genre. Born in Turin, he became a prominent figure in the development of the violin repertoire and instrumental music of the period. Somis studied under renowned violinist and composer Arcangelo Corelli, which significantly influenced his style. Among his notable works are a series of violin sonatas and concertos, particularly the "Sonate da camera" and "Sonate da chiesa," which showcased his skill in blending Italian melodic elegance with intricate counterpoint. His compositions often demonstrated virtuosic violin techniques and expressive lyricism, contributing to the evolution of violin playing in the Baroque period. Somis's impact on music is marked by his role in bridging the transition from the late Baroque to the early Classical styles, influencing later composers such as Giuseppe Tartini. He is also credited with advancing the technical demands placed on violinists, which helped to elevate the status of the violin as a solo instrument. His works remain a testament to the richness of the Baroque violin repertoire and continue to be performed by musicians today.
